Turret clocks were our first horological area of interest. It began with our 1990 purchase of a 1731 clock by R. Smallwood of Macclesfield, Cheshire with its accompanying very heavy Rudhall bell, dated 1733. All were believed to have been made for and installed in Alderley Park, near Alderley Edge, Cheshire. Today we visited Cumbria Clock Company at Stoneraise Workshops, Salkeld Road, Penrith, CA11 9NF. The new setting is wonderful with lots of space all of which is well lit. There were clocks both turret and domestic which were undergoing restoration and in varying states of completion. Many were already ticking and looking very smart. Keith’s clock collection was housed on the mezzanine level where some were awaiting work whilst others had been restored. After viewing the workshops we listened to a fascinating talk entitled: AMERICAN ‘SUPERIORITY’ AT THE 1851 GREAT EXHIBITION by well-known horologist Bob Frishman from Boston, USA . It was a very interesting day.
